Scaling Financial Learning Across Schwab's Global Platform

A unified learning ecosystem for 1.8M+ investors, built on top of two merged platforms and a decade of legacy content.

Post-merger, Schwab inherited a fragmented learning experience — TD Ameritrade's content lived in one system, Schwab's in another, and neither worked well across web, tablet, and mobile.

I led end-to-end design for a unified ecosystem: a new component library, a re-architected information model, and a migration of 1.8M users with no drop in engagement.

The Problem

Two learning platforms, inconsistent across every surface.

Before — TD Ameritrade
Desktop only
TDA legacy desktop
After — Unified Schwab

The fragmentation wasn't visual.
It was architectural.

The Approach

Re-architecting the information model.

I mapped how content actually moved through the two systems — what learners searched for, where they dropped off, and which paths the old taxonomy made impossible.

The new model collapsed two parallel ecosystems into one Insights & Education hub, organized around how users consume — commentary, learning paths, courses, planning — with topic filtering as a second navigation layer.

1
State-driven rows Each item carries its own progress state without recomputing siblings — critical for large catalogs.
2
Token-based density One component, three density tokens. Same row works on desktop tables and mobile lists.
3
Accessible by default Status communicated through icon, color, and label — not color alone.
40%
Increase in module completion across the primary learning tracks after migration.
